Which sport boasts the fittest athletes? Is it rugby or netball? Or hockey? Or maybe even local-body politics?

Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt donned the lycra to help launch the Clash of the Codes inter-sport track-cycling competition this week.

The aim of the contest is to pit code against code – from rugby players and rowers, to marathoners and netballers – all in the name of science. And, of course, bragging rights.

Cycling Southland hopes that some national representatives will volunteer to take part.

The Clash of the Codes competition runs from 7pm on Wednesday, July 23, with different sports teams training for a final in either division two on September 5 or division one, which will take place during the Cycling Southland Track Carnival from October 7 to 9.

Shadbolt, New Zealand’s longest-serving mayor clocked up a lap time of 25.57sec.
