Police probe early morning fatal crash
Police have named the dairy farmer killed in a crash north of Winton.
Stefan Zeestraten, 24, of Centre Bush died when his four-wheel-drive vehicle left the road and slammed into a power pole early yesterday.
The investigation into the cause of the crash was continuing.
Western Southland area response manager Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley said emergency services responded to the crash in Limehills-Browns Rd, in Western Southland, about 3am.
The crash involved just Zeestraten's vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser.
"It appears the vehicle had crossed on to the wrong side of the road and impacted on a concrete power pole before coming to rest in the ditch," Fairley said.
The power pole was dislodged at the base but remained upright because of the wires.
Zeestraten, an Otapiri dairy farmer, was trapped in the vehicle but was found dead, she said.
The serious crash investigator had forensically mapped the scene and the investigation was continuing, Fairley said.
