*555 call helps catch drink-driving tourist
A tourist driving on the wrong side of the road was caught after a concerned motorist chased him.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said a member of the public noticed a car being driven on the wrong side of the road and crossing the centre line near Frankton on Monday.
The man called *555 to report the driver before following the car, which was heading toward Queenstown, Benn said.
While following the car, the man saw bottles being thrown out the car's windows. He continued following the car for about 5 kilometres until it pulled into a Queenstown address. He then alerted police.
When police identified the driver, who was a tourist in a rental car, they found he had a breath alcohol level of 916mcg.
Benn commended the member of the public for calling *555 and for going "above and beyond" to catch a dangerous driver.
He encouraged anyone who witnessed dangerous driving to make the call.
In the Queenstown area, at any one time, police would have up to five calls from the public about dangerous driving, he said.
