A man might have spent 12 hours in his car in Lake Hayes after driving over a bank.

Queenstown police, ambulance and the Frankton fire brigade attended the scene after the man freed himself and climbed up the steep bank to the main road about 11am yesterday.

He had been driving toward Arrowtown on the Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Rd when he drove onto a dirt road providing access to the lake reserve and over the edge.

The wheels of the car were in the water.
