Invercargill turned into a festive wonderland this afternoon as elves, reindeer and cartwheeling girls entertained thousands of eager spectators.

Warm summer sunshine added to the pre-Christmas fever as plenty of excited spectators flooded the streets to watch the 14th annual Southland Santa Parade.

Awesome and cool was how the children described the parade. Avthokea Fowler, 9, said the best part of the parade was the Flintstones float while Irene Fowler and Siahn Nilsen, both 6, said the giant seal was the highlight.

Kane, 8, and Jacob Hannagan, 7, said the parade was awesome and the best part was the motocross bikes and wheelies.

Parade organiser Rob Ashby said the weather was fantastic and he could not have asked for a better day.
''It was perfect. Great day, good crowd, no dramas at all.''

The highlight of the parade was the children, the Bluff oyster boat and Po the kung fu panda.

The crowd had enjoyed the parade and there were plenty of new plans for next year, he said.
