A rural school campus is needed to ease space for the over-burdened St Joseph's School in Queenstown, the Catholic Church says.

A hearing into the new school proposed for Speargrass Flat Rd began in Queenstown yesterday, with the Catholic Bishop of Dunedin's lawyer Russell Ibbotson presenting evidence.

He said the Queenstown school was over-developed and the new campus could assist with rolls and help accommodate future growth.

However, the proposal had no community support, with 26 submissions made in opposition to the application and none in support.

Critics say the location is not appropriate, that it ruins the rural character for nearby residents and is too far away from the population base.

The hearing is set down for three days.
