Queenstown police have confirmed a person has died after a tree fell down on top of a ute this morning.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said a witness following the ute said the driver braked to avoid the tree on Lower Shotover Rd early this morning, but the tree landed on the front of the ute's cab.

Emergency services have cordoned off the road and covered the front of the cab with a tarpaulin.

It is not known if more than one person is in the ute.

The person's name has yet to be released.

Strong winds have hit the Southern Lakes District today and another tree collapsed on State Highway 6 near the Crown Range earlier in the morning.

The road was closed for a short time until the tree was cleared.
