Unseasonally warm temperatures and rain late last week has temporarily disrupted a bumper start to the ski season in the Southern Lakes but help is on the way with a snow storm forecast for this weekend.

Coronet Peak has been closed until further notice because of the "recent rain, warm temperatures and the consequent loss of snow", NZSki chief executive James Coddington said.

Mr Coddington said yesterday he was confident that snow was on the way.

The Remarkables ski area was set to open on Saturday but a decision would be made on that today. A spokeswoman for Cardrona Ski Area said staff still hoped to open next Friday, "God willing".

Treble Cone Ski Area manager Jackie Van der Voort said she was confident there would be ample fresh snow to open as planned on June 30. The Snow Park and Snow Farm hoped to open this week, providing some fresh snow fell.
