Cardrona skifield had to "close the gates" yesterday.

The call was made by mid-morning after fresh snow resulted in big crowds flocking to the skifield, between Queenstown and Wanaka.

Cardrona marketing and sales manager Nadia Ellis said the decision was made out of respect to the skiers and boarders who were there early in the morning.

"If we were to allow more people on to the field, everyone would be waiting in lift queues for too long, so the call was made to close the gates when we realised how big the numbers were," Ellis  said.

The crowd numbers were exacerbated by the closure of Treble Cone skifield.

After 8cm of snow on Sunday, Treble Cone hopes to reopen today.
