The demolition of an old Shotover St building is well under way, clearing space for a new luxury shopping centre that will revamp Queenstown's main street.

The two-storey building will house well known Queenstown sports retailer Outside Sports on its 750-square-metre ground floor, and luxury shopping on a first floor mezzanine of 440sqm.

"Outside Sports is really looking forward to being able to retail in the new building with two separate entrances and all of our product on the ground floor," Outside Sports managing director John Knight said.

The multimillion-dollar project is being done by Queenstown tourism and business powerhouse Trojan Holdings, which also runs NZSki. The 1200sqm schist and glass building near the northern end of Shotover St received resource consent in June.

Project manager Rob Empson said they hoped the new building would be opened in the first quarter of 2015.

The new building would also revamp Memorial Ave, using it as another entrance, with a new access bridge to be built over Horne Creek.

"The modern building design, great location and landscaping, which will use Horne Creek as a feature should all attract high- end retailers to a new energised part of Shotover St," Empson said.
