Invercargill is jumping on the app developing market.
Part-time app developer Aaron Broad released his Android app The Massive Movie Quiz through his new company Open Range Games on August 10.
The self-taught developer worked through books and internet lessons to teach himself how to code the app.
"I'd never programmed before, first I had to learn Java, and then I had to keep learning how to do stuff along the way but it was something I always wanted to do."
The app is aimed at movie lovers, asking 1250 movie trivia questions, ranging from easy to hard.
Broad spent about four minutes on each question, he said.
There are already two other Open Range games in development, but Broad remained tight-lipped on the details of those.
One game he would be learning 3D programming for though, he said.
Despite being a free app, Broad is gaining revenue from the advertisements in the game - five days in he had gained 39 cents.
But it wasn't about earning money.
Broad works fulltime as a camera operator and spent 18 months of his spare time working on the app.
He hoped his apps would take off and eventually he would be able to establish a software business in Invercargill.
"I'll do it in my spare time and slowly work away to see if it can become a fulltime thing."
The free app can be downloaded from the Android store.
