Social Development Ministry staff met orchard industry leaders in Central Otago yesterday but are choosing to keep quiet on discussions.

The meeting was with orchardists to discuss seasonal labour needs.

The development staff were led by regional commissioner John Allen.

Social Development Ministry southern region labour market manager Paul Casson declined to comment on the meeting yesterday. A spokesperson said a statement would be made later in the week.

The Central Otago seasonal workforce, which peaks between 3500 and 4000, included Kiwis, backpackers and about 3 per cent Seasonal Employment Scheme permit holders.

Clearvue Vineyard manager Duncan Cramp said the 81ha pinot noir vineyard had 13 seasonal workers on its books – 10 Kiwis and three working holidaymakers.

There was an abundance of available workers, mostly backpackers, he said.

Last week Cromwell-based Vine-Tech Contracting managing director Geoff Moore said there appeared to be plenty of workers available, mostly backpackers and SES permit holders.
