Southland District Council chief executive officer David Adamson was last night recognised for his commitment to engineering.
The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand presented Mr Adamson with the Turner Award for Professional Commitment at a black-tie function in Auckland.
Since graduating from Lincoln University with an agricultural engineering degree in 1981, Mr Adamson's career has been primarily in the local government sector.
IPENZ chief executive Andrew Cleland said he has also made some significant community and national contributions to the engineering industry, to national working groups and to swimming and school governance in Southland.
"David's service, commitment and leadership embrace and reflect the qualities represented by the Turner Award," he said.
Mr Adamson said he was humbled at learning of his award.
"I'm quite chuffed to be getting it, but there's lots of other people doing lots of really good things in engineering."
Working in local government had been a good career move that had provided many opportunities, he said.
Southland District Council Mayor Frana Cardno said the award was well justified.
"We are very proud of him," she said.
