IN THE DARK: Sue Patterson, project manager of Arrowtown After Dark, will be working with employees of the New Orleans Hotel from left, Anna McGillirray, Jessica Milne and Georgie Whittaker on the new night-time shopping concept.

Discover Arrowtown is planning a new way to entice shoppers into the town after dark, with special offers and plenty of community spirit.

Arrowtown After Dark is a new promotional event setting out to capture a magic atmosphere for shoppers and visitors to Arrowtown after normal shop operating hours.

Event manager Sue Patterson said the aim was to capture the "magic hour in Arrowtown" when the sun is just setting over the hillside, providing a picturesque setting.

The streets would be lined with braziers to keep people warm, and refreshments such as mulled wine would be offered, she said.

The shops in the town centre would stay open from 5pm until 7pm and offer special promotions for the after-hours customers. A competition with a big prize would also be run. Arrowtown After Dark would be family-friendly and possibly include children's movies, Mrs Patterson said.

This was the first time an event like this had taken place in Arrowtown and should be really special, she said.

The event was set to take place every Thursday in August, starting on August 2.
