Club's fitness award 'coup for Queenstown'

Queenstown Lakes District Council-controlled organisation Lakes Leisure was a big winner at the 2012 New Zealand Fitness Industry Awards held in Auckland on Saturday night.

Lakes Leisure's Alpine Health & Fitness was named Club of the Year in the medium-sized gym category, beating stiff competition from around the country. The awards have been running since 2005 and are designed to recognise those making a contribution to the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders through exercise and fitness.

Alpine Health & Fitness manager Richie Heap said beating 27 other centres to win the award was particularly pleasing given the geographical location of the Frankton-based facility.

"It's a bit of a coup for Queenstown. All of the other finalists are from big places.

"We are in a bit of a bubble here and it's quite hard to benchmark ourselves against other facilities," he said.

It was the first time the organisation had entered the awards and Mr Heap said they were already planning to enter other categories in 2013. He credited a combination of good facilities, great staff and dedicated health centre users with helping to secure the award.
