Gourmet to close; staff laid off

Dunedin icecream manufacturing company Gourmet is closing at the end of this week.

A sign outside the company’s factory in Birch St states the intention. 

Southland Times' owned Dunedin-based community newspaper D Scene understands all staff have been made redundant.

The company, created by Mark and Rae Scorgie about 18 years ago, is well known for its locally-flavoured and inspired icecream.

The couple sold the business to functional food firm BLIS about 18 months ago.

BLIS was behind Gourmet producing its famous probiotic icecream designed to fight throat infections. Its chief executive Barry Richardson did not return calls from D Scene.
