Wanaka jet park plan
Wanaka Airport has potential for use as an overflow park for private and corporate jets because Queenstown Airport often runs out of space.
Queenstown Airport chief executive Scott Paterson told councillors at a meeting last month that Wanaka was an attractive over-flow option for corporate jets.
But before a decision on using the aerodrome as an overflow there needed to be a review of security arrangements at Wanaka as this was a key consideration for corporate and private jets.
During peak season, corporate and private jets sometimes struggle to find parking space at Queenstown Airport and fly to Dunedin or other airports once passengers disembark.
Speaking to The Mirror, Mr Paterson said parking was often at a premium during peak winter and summer seasons.
''We are exploring options around aircraft arriving in Queenstown, passengers being discharged here then the aircraft repositioning itself to Wanaka,'' he said.
Aircraft from a domestic departure destination could fly directly to Wanaka but any international private jets land at Queenstown.
The key consideration for corporate customers was security and the airport was investigating the feasibility of perimeter fencing at Wanaka and the use of private security
