Firm likely to leave Lawrence
Lawrence's biggest employer is moving its business to Dunedin, sources say.
Tuapeka Gold Print employs 80 staff, most of whom live in and around the southwest Otago town of about 400. It has New Zealand's largest branded promotional products production facility in Australasia, its website says.
The award-winning printing firm boasts its commitment to its location on the site, saying its success is evidence that a large manufacturing business does not need to be based in a big city. But, the firm said earlier this year that working from several buildings in Lawrence had become difficult.
It was seeking an investor to finance moving.
Sources say that Tuapeka Gold Print will move to a new place at Fairfield, Dunedin, by December 31.
No staff would lose their jobs. Some would move, but buses would ferry workers between Lawrence and Dunedin to meet rosters.
Tuapeka Gold Print founder Jim Robertson, who established the company printing business cards from his kitchen, would not confirm the decision, saying instead it is "a real possibility".
"We've agonised over it. It's the last thing we want to do," Mr Robertson said.
