Invercargill's Pita Pit is the best in the country for the second year running.

The Tay St store has won the company's national franchise of the year competition for its overall commitment to customer service excellence.

Manager Neil Andrews said he and his wife Denise were absolutely blown away and humbled by the accolade.

"There's so many good franchises out there doing such great things. We've looked up to them, it's been humbling to think they would look up to us."

Pita Pit is an international healthy fast food franchise first opened in Canada in 1995.

Over the years it has expanded into the United States, Australia, France and New Zealand. It opened in Invercargill three years ago.

To win the franchise of the year two years in a row was a huge achievement, Mr Andrews said.

They also won a customer service award, which he credited to the hard work of their staff.

Mrs Andrews said their success showed they were doing something right. "We want to keep doing it and continue to serve our community well," she said.

The store had also been working with schools to educate children on healthy food options.

Yesterday, some year 3 and 4 pupils from St Theresa's School were on site making lunches as part of the school's food studies programme.
