Surging online and mobile sales and a record number of new stores have helped pizza maker Domino's Pizza lift underlying net profit by 38.8 per cent to A$20.2 million ($21.9 million) for the six months ending December.

The result fell short of market consensus forecasts around A$21.1m.

Total sales rose 39.9 per cent to A$576.2m as 60 new stores in Australia, New Zealand and Japan augmented same-store sales growth of 4.6 per cent.

Underlying earnings before interest and tax rose 56.5 per cent to A$31.6m - exceeding market forecasts around A$30.5m.

After one-off costs of A$2.7m, bottom line net profit rose 28.2 per cent to A$18.6m.

Domino's chief executive Don Meij said almost 60 per cent of total sales were now coming from online in Australia, with over 50 per cent of those sales from mobile devices.

The company will pay shareholders an interim fully franked dividend of 17.7c a share, up 14.2 per cent, payable March 11.
