Wyndham and Edendale have put their rivalries to good use to raise $28,000 to split between their respective communities.
The inaugural Battle of the Bridge Flyer turned into an epic war of words, comedy, fundraising, tractor pulling and dramatic talent as Wyndham fought off a determined Edendale team at the weekend.
However, most importantly, it turned into a great fundraiser for Wyndham and Edendale Primary Schools, Menzies College and the Wyndham and Edendale Rugby Clubs.
Event co-ordinator, Pam Yorke said the proceeds would go towards projects such as rugby lights, additions to clubrooms and a veranda at Edendale School. The school had put off completion of its new hall veranda for years, she said, but now it could happen.
Event organiser Gerry Forde said success of the first Flyer concept would hopefully be repeated across Southland.
"Mossburn and Tuatapere will host an event in the next two weeks and the event will no doubt spread to the rest of the province as struggling community groups realise the power of combining their efforts behind a proven concept with great money earning and entertaining potential," he said.
