Generous artist's work on show

Southland artist Darryl Smith will be showing a collection of 30 pieces at Invercargill's Bank Gallery in October. Smith, who painted 29 pieces for families of the Pike River coal mine victims last year, has also donated several paintings to areas that have suffered tragedy including Christchurch, Norway, and Chile.

Riverton Arts Centre has been given a new look and is reopening with a new name at the end of the month. The Art Cove will be unveiled today, with special guest and William Hodges Fellow Gary Freemantle set to speak.

Freemantle will be speaking about the life of William Hodges, the artist who accompanied Captain James Cook on his second voyage to the Pacific.

The Art Cove will open with a huge selection of original artworks, prints, jewellery, books, cards, furniture, sourced from the gallery's list of past artists and also from new contributors.
