Two Southland students who competed in a national speech competition at the weekend did not gain places but performed well, the organiser said.
Sophie Worner, of James Hargest College (Invercargill), and Keith O'Connor, of St Peter's College (Gore), won their district finals this year and earned their place at the New Zealand Lions Clubs Young Speechmaker national finals, held in Auckland on Saturday.
Organiser Kerry Beach said the competition, which has been running for 40 years, helped give the participants self-confidence.
The national final was won by Thomas Moss, of Hamilton, with Oscar Shaw of Wellington second and Saini Manisha of Tokoroa third.
