It's back to band camp for seven Invercargill students this spring.

The group of six from James Hargest College and one from Southland Girls High School have made it into the group of 48 who will be practising and performing in Rotorua as the National Secondary School Brass Band in October.

Quintin Blaas, 15, Shaun Chalmers, 16, William Swan, 14, Jade Halford, 15, Clair Yorkstone, 15, Anna Redmond, 14, and Horace Zhang, 13, will be taking two tenor horns, one flugelhorn, three cornets and a trombone with them on the trip north.

The national band is made up of students from around New Zealand who have been selected based on taped auditions.

As the group made their way to regular band practice at the James Hargest campus yesterday, the young musicians said they were excited to go somewhere new to pick up new skills and polish up old ones in the workshop series and performances.

The camp will be held in Rotorua from October 11 to 17.
