A 13-year-old Invercargill dancer says a recent trip to Hong Kong helped her achieve top marks in her jazz exam.
Anna Henderson, who attends jazz and hip hop dance classes at Jazz Time dance studio in Invercargill, received a score of 99 per cent in the Australasia 2012 Intermediate Level 1 Jazz Addict Exams.
Anna was the youngest team member of 26 dancers from Jazz Time who travelled to Hong Kong and Beijing last year, where they took dance classes, and she said the classes in Hong Kong were a big part of her preparation for the exams.
''In Hong Kong, we learned to dance from our heart."
Anna's dancing was examined on warm up, classical technique, jazz arms and strength, floor work, travelling progression, turns, legs, two jazz dances, lyrical musical theatre and student choreography.
She received 100 per cent for all of the sections except classical technique and one of her two jazz dances, in which she received 99.5 per cent.
She could not remember when she began dancing but believed it was when she was three or four.''My first memory was doing a 'devil dance' with Lou's (her dance teacher) daughter.''
A "devil dance" involved dressing up with a little tail and horns, and was a lot of fun, she said.
She often danced around the living room at home, and drove her family crazy by having her dance music up loud, she said.
With hopes of becoming a professional dancer, Anna will return to Hong Kong as well as travel to Thailand in July, next year, along with 29 of her Jazz Time class mates for more lessons.
''I'm really excited to be going back.''
