Students vie for $2000 award

Nearly 40 student artists will have the chance to win a $2000 prize at the Emerging Artist Awards today.

City Gallery co-ordinator Kathryn Blomfield said entries were open to all students at the Southern Institute of Technology in all areas of arts, including visual media, film and animation.

There were several prizes, including the $2000 top prize, a $500 runner-up prize and smaller prizes for excellence, Ms Blomfield said.

The event allowed students to experience the process of having work placed in a gallery.

"A student just came in and handed their work in with [no details] on the back. Some galleries will reject it immediately, so this is the chance for [the students] to learn the rules," she said.

Southsure Insurance offered a five-year sponsorship when the event was set up and this was the second year for the awards, Ms Blomfield said.

"Students tell us they love getting to mix with people in other areas [of art]," Ms Blomfield said.

Entries will be on display for public viewing from tomorrow until July 3.

The awards evening will start at 5.30pm at the City Gallery.
