Most dogs see only a dozen birthdays, but this weekend, the Invercargill City Libraries will help one special dog celebrate his 30th.
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy, the little dog created by author Lynley Dodd, first appeared in print 30 years ago, and the library is throwing a party to celebrate.
Invercargill City Libraries events and design co-ordinator Jane Watkinson said it had been fun organising the festivities for the beloved book character, which would take place at the library on Saturday.
The birthday party would feature games and activities including pin the tail on the dog and colouring-in competitions, as well as face painting and birthday cake, she said. There would also be a special story time, when all the favourite characters, including Bottomley Potts, Hercules Morse, Slinky Malinki and Scarface Claw, the toughest tom in town, would make an appearance.
Invercargill City Libraries children's librarian primary focus Megan Burns said even after three decades, the books were still incredibly popular.
"We have three or four copies of every title and they're never on the shelf."
In conjunction with the library, Tisbury School pupils had made a happy birthday video, which would be sent to Penguin Books and watched by Dodd.
Hairy Maclary's birthday celebrations will begin at noon on Saturday, with story time starting at 1.30pm.
