A first trailer for Beyond The Edge, the 3D film about Sir Edmund Hillary's legendary ascent of Mt Everest hast been released.
The film mixes archival footage with dramatic re-creations of Hillary's 1953 climb, filmed on location in New Zealand's Southern Alps, the Himalayas and Mt Everest.
Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major worked on the film alongside noted Kiwi cinematographer Richard Bluck, while Nelson actor Chad Moffitt portrayed a young Hillary and Mt Cook resident Sonam Sherpa appeared as Tenzing Norgay.
The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and open in New Zealand on October 24.
Auckland-based Leanne Pooley, who wrote and directed the film, said it was a wonderful opportunity to be able to bring to life one of the "great adventure tales of all time".
"Sir Ed's story comes with all the elements of an epic journey: personal sacrifice, high stakes, political intrigue, and extreme risk, all set in an extraordinary landscape.
"It is important to me that the audience really goes on this journey, experiencing with the young Ed what it means to reach beyond what we know to be possible."
Pooley will be in Toronto for the film's premiere in September alongside producer Matthew Metcalfe and Peter Hillary.
The film was financed by the New Zealand Film Commission in association with NZ On Air's Platinum Fund, TVNZ, Digifilm and Rialto Distribution.
