Southland students "gleeked out" at the annual Invercargill Schools' Sing Out opening at the Civic Theatre.

With this year's theme being "Gleek Out", about 230 of the students involved belted out songs from the hit show Glee last night including Don't Stop Believin' and Landslide.

A mash-up of Hit Me With Your Best Shot and One Way or Another was also heard, as well as Just The Way You Are.

Sing Out musical director Sarah Rae could not stop smiling as she walked off stage after the first performance of the night.

Sing Out was one of the highlights of her year, she said.

Ms Rae, who has been involved with the event for more than 20 years, said 20 schools were involved in the three-day event, including about 650 students.
