Ahead of the release of the new trailer for The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug tomorrow we have been handed some exclusive character images to share with our readers.
Meet Elvenking Thranduil, who encounters Bilbo and the dwarves in his realm of Mirkwood and locks them in his dungeons.
He is portrayed by American actor Lee Pace. Peter Jackson announced the casting news on 30 April 2011, while simultaneously revealing that Pace had been a favourite for the part, after he saw his performance in The Fall. The character first appeared in the prologue in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will appear in the next two films.

The trailer is released tomorrow morning and the The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug hits cinemas on December 12. After last year's huge Wellington premiere of the first movie the stars will celebrate the premiere overseas for this film.
