Former All Blacks captain Anton Oliver is on tour with the NZSO this week as their guest narrator in the classic tale "Peter and the Wolf". Check in each day for an update on where they are and what he and the band are up to.
Last night's concert in Gore was excellent.
The orchestra as usual were their brilliant self, and I was far happier with my performance than the previous night in Dunedin.
The theatre in Gore is small and intimate, which meant I could have an immediate interaction with the audience which I find helps. I'd rather be talking to people directly than to a big empty space that I know has people in it but I either can't see them or they're so far away that I feel disconnected from them: Dunedin was a little like that - the audience were a good 15m away from the front of the stage.
We had a birthday on tour last night. Peter van Drimmelen, the oldest member in the orchestra, celebrated his birthday and in our sound check the orchestra sang "Happy Birthday" to him. I made a special mention of it in my role as MC at the start of the show. I also presented him with the flowers I get given every night. As I was delivering these, calls went out 'kiss him kiss him' so we went very European for a moment and did the cheek to cheek thing on both sides. We both have beards so it was very prickly!
I'm not sure what it's like in the rest of the country, but it hasn't stopped blowing a gale here since we left Dunedin - all day and night, classic spring equinox stuff.
I've got two interviews on the radio this morning, one at 7am and the other at 7.30pm (it's 5.30am now). For some reason my body clock has decided that 4am is a perfectly good time to rise and shine. I've tried everything in an attempt to break this - going for a hard run, staying up late, having a bit to drink, but I can't seem to convince my internal regulator that 6am or 7am are more appropriate times for the carcass to awaken.
Any help/tips/advice with this would be greatly appreciated.
