A "painstakingly beautiful ink and watercolour work" by a Christchurch artist has won The Arts Gold Viewers' Choice award.
Spokeswoman Maxine Williams said Sharnae Beardsley's winning painting UNTITLED 190612 was based on close observation and a rich imagination.
Her work showed plants, insects and animals existing in a new light.
Naturalistic surrealism influences were evident in her "unusual juxtapositions and tendency to reveal honest, yet sometimes awkard proportions of her organic specimens".
The $1000 prize was sponsored by the Alexandra Community Arts Council committee.
Cathy Beirnes won the voters' draw for six bottles of Central Otago wine.
