Kiwi singer Lorde has hit another milestone of music fame, gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

The 17-year-old Aucklander, Ella Yelich-O'Connor, is featured on the iconic magazine with the headline The Girl Who Broke the Rules.

Rolling Stone contributing editor Rob Tannenbaum, flew to New Zealand to interview her.

The article, on sale tomorrow, promises to explore Lorde's childhood, tracks the song Royals' ascent to number one, and examine how she became an icon for teen girls.

"Tannenbaum tags along as Ella texts with Taylor Swift, jokingly messes with one of many fans asking for photos on the street [and then apologises - twice]," says the Rolling Stone preview.

"She opens up about the racially-charged controversy that erupted when a photo of her embracing her boyfriend on the beach hit the blogs, and chats about how she's taken control of her career and spun seemingly unpopular decisions into genius."

Lorde tweeted this morning she had to "keep reminding myself that this is my life".

"This month's rolling stone cover girl: yours truly."

Lorde is nominated for four Grammy music awards, including record of the year, alongside Daft Punk & Pharrell Williams, Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke, for Royals.

Other nominations included best pop vocal album, for Pure Heroine, and best pop solo performance for Royals.

Lorde will also perform at the awards, which are on January 27 (NZ time) and perform in Auckland on January 29.
