The great Bobby Keys is playing a show in Auckland, April 4 - consider it the perfect curtain raiser for The Rolling Stones the next night. Or check it out as a standalone show. You know Bobby Keys if you know The Rolling Stones; the sax player has appeared on many of the band's greatest albums - and is often a highlight of the group's live shows too. On recent tours his extended break on the song Miss You has definitely been a concert highlight, then there's the ripping-good Can't You Hear Me Knocking - for my money one of the Stones' best tracks.
He's been with the band for so long.
Hey, but outside of all that Keys is a legend for his work as part of Joe Cocker's great Mad Dogs and Englishmen and Eric Clapton's self-titled solo debut and albums by B.B. King and Dr. John; John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Warren Zevon, Harry Nilsson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Faces, Donovan, Chuck Berry and solo albums from his stones compadres Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood.
Actually, the list goes on a lot longer. But you get the point - the man has played with almost everyone and absolutely everyone who is anyone. He's also partied as hard as any of the people he worked with - a wingman for Keith Richards, sparring partner, drinking buddy, hell-raiser, party-goer...even worse: party-stayer...
Keys is one of the great sidemen in rock'n'roll history - if you know anything about The Rolling Stones' story then you know about Bobby Keys.
His band sounds good too - The Suffering Bastards - some great players, drummer from The Cardinals, session guys who have worked with the likes of John Fogerty, Georgia Satellites, Poco and Skynyrd.
So the details for the show are here, Friday, April 4, Powerstation, Auckland.
Have you ever been to see a sideman out on his own away from the main band?
And is this something you'd like to see? Are you a Bobby Keys fan? Do you have a favourite track or album he's appeared on?
