One of the founding fathers of Hip Hop, Grandmaster Flash will play an exclusive New Zealand show at Queenstown's Loco Cantina next Friday.

Since forming seminal crew Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in the mean streets of New York's Bronx in the late 1970s, Joseph Saddler has remained a relevant force in the genre he co-created, even as it became a multi-billion dollar industry complete with its own corporations and moguls.

He DJed at the 1998 NFL Superbowl, performed at the closing of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games in front of Queen Elizabeth II and has starred in Louis Vuitton campaigns.

Loco and Base general manager Rich Deane said scoring New Zealand's only Grandmaster Flash show since a 2011 Rhythm and Vines appearance was a pinnacle achievement that showed the evolution of the venue that had rebranded last year.

"Our marketing company in Australia was chasing this gig for us so we're really stoked with the result.

"We've been ramping things up on the live music front, with gigs by The Upbeats and Opiuo that were real stormers with packed crowds, and getting someone of the calibre of Grandmaster Flash for an exclusive New Zealand gig definitely shows the direction we're pushing in."

The $20 earlybird tickets have already sold out. A second release of $25 tickets will be available at Loco/Base and locoqueenstown.com, moving to $35 closer to the event.
