Entertainer of the Year 'overwhelmed'
Michelle Lange has been named Kelvin Hotel Southland Entertainer of the Year 2014.
The winner was decided at the ILT Southland Entertainment Awards 2014 last night by celebrity judges Craig Scott, Suzanne Prentice and Dave Kennedy and the audience at the Civic Theatre.
After winning the award Michelle Lange said she was overwhelmed.
All of the nominees were friends and all were of "such a high standard", she said.
Event organiser Chris Chilton said the five ''brightest stars of the last 12 months in Southland'' were nominated for the Kelvin Hotel Southland Entertainer of the Year.
They were: television's X Factor personality Bryan Townley, 2013 New Zealand Gold Guitar winner Cheryl Anderson and popular musicians Simon Galt, Michelle Lange and Simon Thompson.
The packed Civic Theatre enjoyed an array of musical talent as popular Southland musicians took to the stage last night.
Dave McMeeking and the show band opened the ILT Southland Entertainment Awards 2014 last night, followed by the Ascot Park Hotel Brass Band.
Awards organiser Chris Chilton said about 800 tickets had sold yesterday afternoon, which was by far the biggest crowd in the six years the awards had been held at the Civic Theatre.
Before the show last night there was a ''real sense of excitement'' among the performers, Mr Chilton said.
''Everybody is buzzing.''
Finalists and organisers had been busy preparing for the ''Oscars of Invercargill entertainment'', where 22 awards were presented.
Among the award winners, Invercargill band Into The East won band of the year and album of the year, while New Zealand's Got Talent finalist Jenny Mitchell received the Frank Prattley award.
Expat Southland songbird Jackie Bristow, who performed last night, received the Westpac Southland Music Ambassador award.
