Young stars: The good, the bad and the awful
Who are your kids looking up to? From twerking Miley to pot-wielding Bieber, teenagers these days don't have the greatest role models.
Here is a cheat's guide to who your kids are looking up to, and the best direction to (gently and without them realising) point them in. Check out the good, bad and awful young stars in the gallery above.
WHO: Jennifer Lawrence, 23
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Winning an Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook and being nominated for American Hustle. She's also the star of The Hunger Games trilogy, which is more successful than even the Harry Potter series.
WHY WE LOVE HER: There's nobody who listens to Jennifer Lawrence and doesn't have a giant crush on her. She keeps it real, is awesomely honest in interviews and famously fell over both times at the Academy Awards, graciously picking herself up.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? It's hard to imagine . . . unless she does something really stupid like go out with Justin Bieber.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 10/10
WHO: Dakota Fanning, 20
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Nominated for a SAG Award at age eight in I Am Sam, her film credits include War of the Worlds, Charlotte's Web, The Runaways, The Motel Life, Coraline and The Twilight Saga.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: Here's a surprise, her movies! Dakota is one of the only young actresses who hasn't let her private life overshadow her career. Subsequently, there's less to write about and she doesn't get half as many column inches as the other girls.
FAVOURITE MOMENT: She graduated from high school as homecoming queen. Yes, this girl still went to actual school while making all those movies.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? She's been around long enough to know the dangers, so probably not.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 9/10
WHO: Lorde, 17
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Winning two Grammys at 17 for her debut album.
BEST INFLUENCES: Lorde stands on her own as not conforming to the Hollywood image. She doesn't dress as sexily as Selena Gomez, isn't aiming for Disney princess with her hair and makeup like Vanessa Hudgens and doesn't sing about every boy she's ever been out with like Taylor Swift. She's an individual who isn't afraid to show it.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? Not unless Lohan goes goth.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 9/10
WHO: Taylor Swift, 24
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: She's just topped the list of highest earning musicians, earning a cool $44 million in 2013.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: Her romances with famous men like Harry Styles and Joe Jonas, which she sings about in her music. Whatever works.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? This goody two-shoes? Unlikely. She sings from the heart and her genuine feelings come through in her music, which could be why she's so successful.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 9/10
WHO: Jaden Smith, 15
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Starred in movies The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid, and has had a single out with Justin Bieber.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: Being Will Smith's son. He now dates Kylie Jenner.
WILL HE GO LOHAN? Who knows what happens behind closed doors, but in front of them this is one kid who looks like he has it together.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 9/10
WHO: Kylie and Kendall Jenner, 16 and 18, the youngest of the Kardashian clan.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Erm. Well, there's Kendall's modelling - she just walked in all the shows, including Chanel and Givenchy. The pair also released a clothing range last year.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: Having a family reveal their entire lives on reality television.
REDEEMING QUALITIES: When Kendall's mum Chris Jenner wanted to take her to Tahiti for her 16th birthday, Kendall said no because there were children starving all over the world, not understanding how Chris could be so extravagant.
WILL THEY GO LOHAN? Anything is possible in Hollywood, but their mum sure knows how to keep a family on track, so it's doubtful.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 7/10. With not a sex tape or scandal on the horizon, these two might actually have escaped the Kardashian fame curse and have inherited a great work ethic.
WHO: Selena Gomez, 21
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place and movies Monte Carlo, Spring Breakers and Hotel Transylvania, plus four successful albums.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: Her on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber. The pair broke up in 2012 after reports Bieber cheated on her with a prostitute, but have just gotten back together.
REDEEMING QUALITIES: Out of all the Young Hollywood troupe, Gomez is the one who seems to have her head on the right track. She's associated with a number of charities and was named a UNICEF spokeswoman for the Trick or Treat for UNICEF campaign in 2009, travelling to Ghana for her role. "I feel very honoured that I have a voice that kids listen to and take into consideration," she said of using her star power for good.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? While all signs were pointing to no, Gomez took a voluntary stay in a rehab facility in January this year - "not for substance abuse", her rep says. Dawn at the Meadows in Arizona specialises in emotional trauma, addiction or dual diagnoses. Gomez said she needed to "spend time on myself in order to be the best person I can be". Make of that what you will.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 7/10
WHO: Vanessa Hudgens, 25
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: The High School Musical movie trilogy, Spring Breakers, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Sucker Punch. She's also had music released via High School Musical and a solo album in 2008.
WEB TRIP-UPS: Hudgens has had not one but two nude photos she texted to her boyfriend leaked on the internet. Terrifically embarrassed, Hudgens apologised to her Disney fans and her dad.
FAMOUS BOYFRIENDS: Her first sweetheart was heart-throb Zac Efron, a boy who is so good looking he makes grown women weep. Ditto for her current squeeze, Austin Butler from The Carrie Diaries.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? Despite her earlier sexting "lapses of judgment", it seems Hudgens is the real deal, focusing on building a career rather than creating headlines by partying.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 5/10.
WHO: Lady Gaga, 27
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Hijacking the music scene at a time when dance music was just getting traction in the US, she rode the wave to fame with three albums in four years.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: Her wacky sense of style which peaked when she wore a lobster on her hat and then showed up at the Grammys encased in a perspex egg. The only place to go from there was normality, and that's the direction she's headed right now.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN: There's no doubt she likes to party, having even partied with Lohan, but she keeps her private life private. We barely know what makes this Lady tick.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 6/10 for showing that hard work pays off.
THE DOWNRIGHT AWFUL
WHO: Miley Cyrus, 21
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Disney series Hannah Montana, the subsequent Hannah Montana film and four solo albums.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: This is the girl who taught the world what twerking was, writhing on stage with Robin Thicke at the MTV Movie Awards, then swung naked on a wrecking ball in her film clip. She's had more gifs, memes and YouTube video mocks than any other young celeb, Lindsay Lohan excluded, but forges forward in her image overhaul from cheesy-faced Disney star to edgy sex-crazed, drug-associated rock chick.
LOWLIGHTS: Take your pick. The time she tried to be cool by smoking a joint onstage at the MTV Awards was winning until she tweeted a shot of herself caressing a hand-shaped dildo this month.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? It's not a matter of if. Miley has done things publicly that even Lohan didn't do. But she still looks a picture of good health, so until we start to see telltale Lohan skin and eyes, she's safe for now.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 0/10
WHO: Justin Bieber, 20
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Became famous on YouTube at 16 and was signed to Usher's record label, then released four No. 1 albums in a row. Has more than 50 million Twitter fans, known as "Beliebers", and one of his first videos, Baby, has just reached 1 billion views on YouTube.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: It's more of a case of what isn't he famous for, with every move well documented on social media. He's been photographed with strippers who have sold their story "my night with Justin Bieber", prompting Biebs to confiscate the phones of anyone he parties with. Tales of private jets so choked with marijuana fumes that the pilot has to wear a gas mask fill the internet and photos of him peeing in the mop bucket of a hotel restaurant kitchen where he was making a sneaky escape flood the web. Those of us who aren't fans are suffering from TMB (Too Much Bieber).
LOWLIGHTS: The police raids on his house for egging the neighbours, his arrest for DUI, though I understand his protestations at being patted down by police: "What did I do? I don't have any weapons", which was construed as resisting arrest.
WILL HE GO LOHAN? Fairly likely. The deposition video where he's being questioned shows a cocky, sullen, rude boy who refuses to answer questions.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 4/10.
WHO: Rihanna, 26
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: She's had 13 number one hits in seven years and has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
MOST FAMOUS FOR: With this many records sold, it's her music, but her unique style is also reaching iconic status.
LOWLIGHTS: When she got back together with Chris Brown two years after he physically abused her. Thankfully, she came to her senses and ditched him. She's also tweeted pics of her smoking weed and taking what looks like other substances, and likes to grab her crotch on stage in teensy outfits.
WILL SHE GO LOHAN? Not so out of control as Lohan, but RiRi definitely likes a good party.
ROLE MODEL RATING: 4/10
WHO: Reality TV stars in general.
WHAT SHOWS: Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, Teen Mom, anything on MTV
WHY? They drink, they throw up, they sleep around, they get into fights at clubs, they yell at people, they laugh about it. Despite the fact that kids are probably laughing at this stuff, it's starting to seep in as "normal".
ROLE MODEL RATING: 1/10
