Adventurers put pen to paper for Wanaka's new book festival
Books on kayaking, adventure racing and canyoning edged out 17 other entrants to make the shortlist for the inaugural New Zealand Mountain Book Festival grand prize.
The $500 prize will be announced in Wanaka on July 1 during the New Zealand Mountain Film and Book Festival.
The shortlisted authors are Max Grant, of Ashhurst (Fiordland and Beyond - A Circumnavigation of the South Island of NZ by Kayak, winner of adventure travel category), Nelson adventure racer Nathan Fa'avae (Adventurer at Heart, winner mountain and adventure non-fiction category) and Daniel Clearwater of Wanaka (Canyoning in New Zealand, winner adventure guides, travel and poetry category).

The book festival is a sister event to the long-running film festival, now in its 14th year.
Co-director Mark Sedon said the goal of the book event is to offer a variety of formats to make adventure, mountain and expedition stories accessible to a range of new audiences.
The literature competition attracted 20 books from authors and publishers, with content covering a wide variety of topics, genre, adventure and locations.
Many of the stories entered "the remotest parts of back-and- beyond and retell some nail-biting situations through vivid imagery and clever language," Sedon said.
Chief judge Darlene Thomson said all the entries brought emotion to the reader "in one way or another".
"It was a pleasure and a privilege to be the judge . . .In the end the three books that were chosen as category winners were ones that I either just couldn't put down or had to keep picking up. I feel that each winning book will appeal to a wide audience, not just to experts in the particular adventure field," Thomson said.
