Parents got a break when more than 50 children attended the Southland District Council holiday programme in Te Anau yesterday.

The programme, run by Venture Southland for children on holidays, continues in several Southland towns until January 23. Event co-ordinator Laura Russell, from Venture Southland, said the programme was for children in rural Southland communities to take part in and get creative.

The kids in Te Anau had put their knitting skills to the test to make scarves and also play games, she said. It was a great start to the holiday programme with 52 kids at the Fiordland Events Centre.

It was going to be a busy three weeks, Ms Russell said.

During her three years of running the programme, it had continued to grow, she said. Parents were welcome to join in the fun and could bring children under 5 if they accompanied them.

There is free transport from some places.

It was not too late to register through all Southland District Council area offices and the Southland i-SITE or download a registration form on the Venture Southland website.
