Grizzlies take to the ice as season opens
Children under 13 from all over the south took to the Gore ice rink on Sunday in the first round robin games of the 2014 ice hockey season.
Teams travelled from Queenstown, Alexandra, Dunedin and Tekapo for the opening round of the Southern Ice Hockey League.
Six teams were split into two pools with the Gore Grizzlies competing in Pool B.
Team manager-coach Grant Scott said the team had come together really well and for two of the players it was their first game.
"McLean Sharp scored a goal in his first game; he was rapt".
The team also had an American influence from Ben Branaman, who had a lot of knowledge to pass on to his team members.
"They played very well for the first game," Scott said.
The Grizzlies won both of their games so will take on Pool A in the next round.
This weekend the Gore ice rink hosts the under-16 grade in their opening round of competition.
