The Southland Shearing Committee is showing a commitment to the sport after building a $40,000 permanent shed in the Winton Racecourse grounds.
Committee member Billy Moylan said the shed was built to host the crossbred lamb shearing championships and the Winton A&P Show. The championships had been held in a marquee last year, the first year the competition was held in Winton after it was moved from Invercargill.
The shed was the first step in progressing the sport, while the committee was hoping to secure a large sponsor for the cross-bred championships next year, Mr Moylan said.
The idea was to increase the prizemoney to attract more shearers from throughout the country, he said.
Half the funding for the shed was supplied by the Southland Community Trust and the remainder was supplied by fundraising through the committee.
