Twenty-three young farmers pitted themselves against the elements, their animals and each other as they took part in the Southland District Young Farmers competition on Saturday.

Convener Jamie McCallum said the competition was "full on" and packed with challenges.

Competitors were tested on several aspects of farming, including tractor driving, motorbike safety, pest control, chainsawing, feed budgets, shearing, dairying, and fencing.

Flower arranging, cake icing, and interview skills also kept the entrants on their toes, Mr McCallum said.

The day was won by Peter Gardyne, of East Chatton, with second place going to Simon Topham, of Hedgehope.

Third place went to Lyndon Wallace, of Waimumu, and fourth was Bruce Paterson, of Scotts Gap.

The men would represent the southern district at the Otago-Southland regional final at the Strath Taieri A&P Show on Easter Monday, he said.
