Lamb from the South Island dominated the results of the fourth annual Golden Lamb Awards – The Glammies – but it was a North Island farming couple who took away the grand prize.

The Glammies were judged at the Upper Clutha A&P Show in Wanaka on Friday, with 15 finalists being scrutinised by a celebrity judging panel that included the Topp Twins, former All Black Richard Loe, Southland chef and food writer Graham Hawkes and Beef & Lamb New Zealand chef Michael Coughlin, of Dunedin.

More than 100 entries were received in the Meat & Wool NZ-sponsored competition.

Barbara and Lyn Murray, of Lawrence, won the dual-purpose section with their romney/perfintex cross, while Phil Reid and Ros Cole, of Gore, won the dual-purpose cross terminal section with a romney/texel cross.

But it was the Fairlea Texels lamb from Hugh and Helen Winder, of Feilding, that was judged the most tender and tasty in New Zealand. It was processed at the winning plant, Land Meat NZ.
