West Otago farmer Richard Young has been elected chairman of a group seeking to get better returns for the meat industry.

A seven-person executive will help lead the Meat Industry Excellence (MIE) group, spawned from a meeting of 1000 farmers at The Gathering in Gore last month.

"We are all active sheep and beef farmers who are totally committed to improving the returns for all farmers, who rely on our red meat industry," Mr Young said.

The initial focus was to gain a national mandate from farmers for change to the industry with meetings planned throughout New Zealand. MIE wanted to promote communication with all groups in the meat industry. The next meeting will be held at the Wigram Aviation Museum in Christchurch on April 17.

Keynote speakers will include agribusiness professor Keith Woodford from Lincoln University.
