Aussie rockers Jet, indie electronica act Passion Pit and warped crooner Devendra Banhart are the highlights of the second Big Day Out announcement.

The second addition of bands, confirmed today, also includes the Simian Mobile Disco DJs, Sasha, Jet, Midnight Youth, Head Like a Hole, Beenie Man, The Veils, Deja Voodoo, Kidz in Space, Cairo Knife Fight, Mountaineater, The True Lovers, Tim Phinn, Bandicoot and Lord of Tigers.

Jet have just released their third album Shaka Rock, and are known for their blistering live shows.

Passion Pit have received plenty of hype this year, thanks to their mix of warped indie electronica and front man Michael Angelakos' catchy falsetto.

They join Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, Muse, Lily Allen, The Mars Volta, Rise Against, Girl Talk, Mastodon, The Horrors and Groove Armada on the bill.

The Big Day Out will be held at Mt Smart Stadium on Friday, January 15. – Stuff

Being into Indie/Electro/Dance music I am absolutely thrilled with the BDO lineup. Groove Amarda, Sasha, The Temper Trap, Passion Pit, Simian Mobil Disco, Calvin Harris, The Decemberists and Ladyhawke !! What a way to spend a day. Absolutely can't wait.

I just read the lineup for Soundwave - http://www.soundwavefestival.com/page/soundwave-festival

Wow.

I bought tickets for the Sydney show straight away - tix only $150 Aus, which is marginally more than BDO - and of course there's flights to consider - but I'm much more amped about the bands playing there!

Meh, so much Meh.

Usually an addict for the BDO but nothing to drag me along. Think I'll go to Wellington and watch the Phoenix that night instead.

Dizzee Rascal- Played in '08 Muse- Played '07 Lily Allen- Played in '07 Kasabian- Pla Muse yed in '07 Eskimo Joe- '07 Mars Volta- Played in '06 Powderfinger- Played in '05. Probably more. Rise Against- '05 Grinspoon- Most years The only one that hasn't played is Groove Armada and Ladyhawke pretty much. The Big Day out used to be an awesome event to give punters the best bands possible for their money. Now it seems to be designed to give the promoters the biggest possible profit margins. In Oz it's become such a social event that it doesn't matter who is on the bill the tickets sell out in no time flat. So from a promoters point of view why pay top dollar for the best acts when mediocre bands will sell it out anyway? At a massive $140 a pop? The problem is that Kiwi punters are left with having their only true international festival being below average at best. It's become like prison food: The order might change a little each year but overall you are still getting dished up the same slop. My rule used to be: Never miss a Big Day Out.They were awesome. But, I for one, have lost my appetite for this .

This line up is shaping up to be great! The people who have issues with the lineups seem to be those who need 'top 40' artists. People need to broarden their horizons. Have these people even heard of artists such as Kasabian, The Decemberists or Devendra Banhart? That's not saying that those mainstream radio artists arent great also, but maybe people should actually sit down and listen to something not forced upon them by zm & the edge

I'm totally underwhelmed, again.

Please bring Soundwave to New Zealand, at least they have some good bands there.

Instead i'll be going to Faith No More, a much better investment

meh - another another crap lineup. luckily im not going and flying to brizvegas to go to soundwave instead.. mwaha. Soundwave = faith no more, anthrax, janes addiction, eagles of death metal, placebo, MESHUGGAH, reel big fish, anti-flag, my chemical romance, him, isis, enter shikari, anvil, aquabats, afi, paramore, taking back sunday, etc etc the list goes on - puts BDO to shame imo

Devendra Banhart!

Holy bojangles. That is awesome. Jet played a stellar set a few years back and held their own against the likes of the Killers and the Living End that year, and Passion Pit doesn't have the public profile in NZ they should...hopefully their gig helps!

Wasn't going to make the trip...now I'm not so sure.
