Best & worst: Billboard Awards
THE MY EYES! ... Country musicians seem to follow a whole dress code of their own, which is perfectly exemplified by this neon on ice medley from Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert. Both women are beautiful and super cool but even they can't make this work. Next birthday I'm going to wish that boob mesh be eradicated from the world as I blow out my candles.
THE INTERESTING: Chrissy Teigen manages to pull off this one-of-Will-Graham's-hallucinations-in-Hannibal dress by Fyodor Golan but I do wish she'd chosen to debut her super blunt fringe another time, as I think a lighter hair do would have been more refreshing. PS: John Legend is rocking in the double polka-dot.
THE FUN: Sequin + bodycon is never going to be my fave, but Jordin Sparks looks pretty amazing in this Michael Costello dress, so credit where credit's due. I think the thing that keeps this on the right side of the taste line for me are her cornrows - they add an element of fun to an otherwise laying-the-sexy-on-thick dress.
THE EVENT APPROPRIATE: While I don't actually like it, this sequin Emilio Pucci skirt suit is youthful, fun and jazzy - which works for the Billboards. The only thing here that is putting fear in my bones is Sarah Hyland's hair - similar to that of J-Law's last week - is this going to be a thing now? I hope not. If you have the guts to shave half your head, then good on you, you can rock an asymmetrical do - but please stop bobby pinning like crazy to emulate such a look.
THE VERY HER: She's basically wearing a swimsuit with some chiffon draped over it, but somehow Jennifer Lopez makes it work. Her gallons-of-hairspray hair, yes, is super overcooked, but I like the colour of this Donna Karan gown and I like the caped shoulders. Plus, it's J-Lo, she's doing her thing ... (it even reminds me somewhat of THAT Versace dress). Don't get me started on Casper, who looks like the Joker b-t-dubs.
THE BAD: I cannot look at a picture of this woman without singing 'Shakira Shakiraaaaa' in my head a la Wyclef. My dislike for this blue dress has been overtaken by my fascination with how hard it would be to get your arms into this webby sucker. Pinky fingers would just be jutting out every two seconds! PS: I'd love it if Shakira went back to her brunette roots too, as this dye job looks like it took a lot of bleach to happen.
THE ALMOST: Kendall Jenner's wearing an outfit by Dutch-Kurdish fashion designer Olcay Gulsen - and while I dig the pants in a big way, I feel this could have still been very fashion forward and a whole lot more chic if the material of that top wrapped around her body a bit more. Thoughts?
LOVE THE NEEDLEPOINT, BUT ... Kiwi-Brit singer Natasha Bedingfield loves to mess with us on the red carpet, and I kind of like her for it - so let's start with the positives: her hair and makeup is resplendent and that needlepoint pattern is actually very pretty (very Valentino a few collections ago). But, alas, that doesn't change the fact she's wearing a black bra with a see-through top, baggy white pants and some of the worst shoe-for-outfit choice known to man. Cut those pants a bit better, choose a peach bra or something that offsets the pattern on the top and completely change the shoes and we might be in business.
THE ALMOST: I love Nicki Minaj's new, less LSD-tastic style (although I do imagine it's left all of her five-year-old fans that thought she was actually a Barbie rather forlorn) and I really love everything about this outfit, including the Alexander McQueen dress, apart from the underboob - connect that bit of material to the bar below and we'd have a super chic look, but I just don't think we need to see breasts from both high and low angles.
THE WOW: Wiz Khalifa's really elevating the art of denim fraying here, while his lady love Amber Rose is taking sunglasses at night to the next level.
THE BAD: There seems to be a real resurgence in ice skater chic at the moment, and Cher Lloyd's really bang on that trend in this Mikael D dress. First things first, girl looks good in purple ... buuuut ... her shoe choice was misguided and this is more costume than couture.
THE ANIMAL-LIKE: Oh Lordey Lorde. I dig that Lorde never walks the red carpet, and I love her fondness for dark lippie and how she's already got a clear personal style ... but looking at this outfit in the picture to the left all I can see is an ostrich ... a goth ostrich ... you know how all their plumage is out back and they've got lots of feather junk in their trunk? That's all I'm seeing. Also, are we looking at pants here? God bless Lorde and her out there fashion.
THE BAD: I'm all about Kelly Rowland, and her top, skirt combo = fine. Not fussed (at least she just went for top-half cleavage. Please see Nicki Minaj to see what I'm harping on about). But that hair?! The worst. It's very Fantasia Barrino (except even Fantasia doesn't wear her hair like that any more).
THE GOOD: I think this is my favourite look on Kesha to date (PS: I refuse to put a $ instead of an 'S' in her name. I'm not going t play that game). Her subtle makeup is beautiful, I actually quite like her purple to light pink ombre hair and the mermaid gown is really flattering. Brava dollar sign lady, brava!
