Red carpet rewind: Angelina Jolie
The 24-year-old daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand emerged onto the red carpet scene in an array of fairly typical outfits for the late 90s. Often on the arm of her older brother James, (and his rather manic eyes) she stuck to minimal looks, and with the exception of the Marilyn Monroe-esque bouffant on the left, kept her hair in a basic pony. Now, I can't help but draw attention to her choice of footwear on the right... Although sensible sandals like these would've been ridiculed just a year ago when shoes were basically shunned if they failed to cause excruciating pain after a couple of hours on one's feet, the return to normcore and it's emphasis on comfort means Ange's baggy pant-pool slide mix is right on trend in 2014. Who would've thought?
Ah yes, the year when Angelina officially migrated from celeb-spawn to wild child. First there was the cringe-worthy smooch with her aforementioned brother on the Oscars red carpet, and then the 25-year-old met and quickly married Billy Bob Thornton, 44. The pair proceeded to grope each other at every opportunity, and were famous for wearing one another's blood in vials around their necks on a daily basis. Anyway, back to the fashion... unlike her peers Angelina maintained a simple approach to style - donning a black dress more often than not, and sporting darkened, vampish locks.
As Angelina became more well-known, her style continued its upward trajectory. On the left at the Golden Globes Angelina achieved her first fashion 'moment' in this va-va-voom strapless Versace number. The rest of the year saw her almost nail a white tuxedo look, (the white shoes!?) and embody every man's fantasy as the real live Lara Croft at the premiere for Tomb Raider.
Cleavage-baring gowns and lengthy tresses featured in practically every single one of Angelina's looks during 2003, and from this point onward her role as a Hollywood sex icon was cemented. Note the first instances of leg cleavage - yes, it was her thing even back then!
Perhaps the most experimental year of them all, 2004 saw Angelina give the red carpet tux another go (ditch the pocket square and nix the oversized collar and it'd be great), look stunning in a off-the-shoulder minidress (I'm doing my best to ignore the bizarre scarf/belt hybrid), and actually pull off an animal-inspired trench. Enjoy the leopard print while it lasts people, because this outfit is practically the last time she dabbles in anything patterned for the next decade.
Otherwise known as the year Angelina became public enemy number one after enjoying the filming of Mr and Mrs Smith a little TOO much. Teams aside (I was one of those firm Team Jen members at the time FYI), there really is no doubting just how amazing the 30-year-old is in that one-of-a-kind leather Versace gown on the left. The mix of goth and glam is so her - so much so that it's impossible to imagine any other actress working this look quite like she did. On the right Angelina gave us the first hint of true old-school chic, a style she seems to become more fond of as the years go by.
Following the insane amount of media surrounding their on-set romance, Brangelina was finally, officially born. Ange sparkled in this beautiful Reem Acra gown the night the pair made their first appearance together, but hey - who's really looking at the dress when her arm candy is that impressive...
And then there was yellow... One of her best years on record, 2007 saw multiple gorgeous gowns from Brad's lady love, but none were quite so stunning as the bright Emanuel Ungaro she wore during the Cannes Film Festival. Everything from the flattering twist of fabric at her waist, to the delicate straps, semi-train and half up 'do worked perfectly together to create one of my personal favourite red carpet looks of all time.
During 2008 Angelina negotiated her first red carpet season while pregnant with varying degrees of success. While the flowing olive green Max Azria creation in the centre is nothing short of stunning, the other two 'maternity-chic' gowns the mum-to-be plumped for aren't doing anything for me. Granted, it must be hard to dress when your stomach manages to gain width every time you look around, but these shapeless brown sacks aren't doing her justice.
Some may say her penchant for block-coloured gowns is a little dull, but personally I couldn't be a bigger fan of Angelina's minimalist aesthetic. Each and every time she stepped out during 2009 (it was mighty hard to choose only three looks!) Ange was styled to absolute perfection. From the beautiful dove grey draping on the left, to those ridiculously large emerald earrings front and centre, and of course the combination of the dreamy nude Versace gown and her bright red lips on the right.
Angelina continued her action-movie star status with the release of both Salt and The Tourist in 2010, meaning dozens of premieres around the world and ample opportunity to display her prized assets - yes, I'm talking about her legs (or leg singular). The memes may have only kicked off after her infamous look at the 2012 Oscars, but it turns out Ange has been hitting this pose for years. On the left Ange rocked an Emporio Armani black sequin mini dress with Salvatore Ferragamo nude heels, in the centre the 35-year-old channelled Audrey Hepburn in a classy high-necked chiffon Versace dress and on the right - and my pick of the three - she looked flawless in an unusual, yet super flattering angora wrap dress also by Versace.
Elegant gowns were the flavour of the year for Mrs Brad Pitt back in 2011 - and again it was a challenge picking just three looks. Appearing on many a 'best dressed ever' list around the world, the first look here is definitely one of Angelina's all-time standouts. It takes savvy styling to be sexy without flashing any skin, and she absolutely nailed it in this glitzy emerald green Atelier Versace number. Later in the year Ange stepped out in a gorgeous one-shoulder midnight blue gown, followed by a dramatic chocolate brown strapless silk dress at the Cannes Film Festival.
She'd been warming up to it for years, but this was the year Angelina really let her leg do the talking - and my oh my did it grab the world's attention (15,000 Twitter followers and coverage on every major media outlet to be exact). Bizarre limb placement aside, the draped black gown was by none other than Atelier Versace yet again and actually worked a treat on her. Another highlight of the year was this beautifully gathered nude and red gown. I love how she's matched her clutch and lips to the pop of cherry red at her collarbone.
Last year the queen of Hollywood continued to showcase her tried and true understated style. My picks of the bunch were these two looks - they're both effortlessly classic with a touch of modernity.
Angelina has barely put a foot wrong in 2014 so far when it comes to style. Early in the year she took yet another stab at pulling off the masculine-inspired tux and this time, she was right on the money. The tailoring is pinpoint, the undone bow-tie adds some interest and her bouncy hair and smoky eyes are the cherry on top. At the Oscars Ange sparkled in a demure Elie Saab gown, and more recently she managed to achieve the seemingly impossible by making a rubberised dress actually work on the red carpet. What a pro.
She once sported vials of blood around her neck, but the Hollywood screen siren has well and truly cleaned up her act on and off the red carpet and evolved into one of the most admired style stars of her generation.
