The cardigan is having its time in the limelight with designers reinventing this wardrobe staple into a trendy must-have piece of the season.

But remember, it is not cool to call it a cardigan any more, that word has been banished to the back of the wardrobe.

The now-called "cardi" has become a versatile piece of clothing and is perfect for the Invercargill climate.

Invercargill has crazy weather patterns and this light but warm piece of clothing is ideal for quick changes in temperature.

Annah S store manager Cher Black says the cardi is a functional piece of clothing.

"You can wear it, then if the weather warms it can be rolled up and put in your handbag," she says.

Fashion designers have taken this garment and made it fresh with new designs.

"Different textures, lengths and colours have brought the once-daggy cardigan into the 21st century," she says.
