Two Southland hairstylists named as finalists in an international hair colour competition have returned from the awards night inspired and ready for another attempt next year.
Raw Blond stylists Rochelle Finlay and Erin Black were the only two South Island finalists in the hairstyling Goldwell Colour Zoom Challenge.
The pair are back in Invercargill after attending the awards night in Melbourne.
Both made it to the top five New Zealand spots in their sections - Miss Finlay was a creative colourist finalist, and Mrs Black a new talent finalist.
Miss Finlay, who has been a hairdresser for about nine years, said she started preparing for the competition in April.
It was the second time she had entered it.
Last year she won her section, earning a place in the international final in Miami.
"I didn't expect to get anywhere the first time but a second time . . . last year I kept saying it doesn't feel real, it doesn't feel real. It's pretty mind-blowing.
"You can do anything if you put your mind to it," she said.
Mrs Black, who has worked at Raw Blond for four years, said this was her first time as a finalist in the competition.
Her entry had an autumn theme because she was naturally drawn to copper and gold shades.
Initially, she thought it was a mistake that her entry had taken her to the finals, she said.
"I kept waiting for the call saying that there had been a stuff-up.
Mrs Black said it was nerve-racking "especially being the only two from the South Island". "It was such an inspirational thing though. Hopefully I will be in again next year."
Miss Finlay also planned to enter the competition again next year.
