Invercargill and Gore cafes will vie for the New Zealand Cafe of the Year title.

Invercargill's Jagz of Village Green and The Green Room Cafe in Gore have made the shortlist from the hundreds of cafes nominated for the nationwide competition.

In its inaugural year, the New Zealand Cafe of the Year competition pits cafes from throughout the country against each other.

Nearly 400 cafes were nominated this year, with more than 20,000 public votes registered to filter the competition down to the final 15.

The cafe finalists all came from regional New Zealand.

An expert team of judges, organised by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand, will begin the judging process and select the overall winner.

The winner of the 2012 New Zealand Cafe of the Year competition will be announced on November 12.
